About this event

AI is already making decisions in your business. Two former in-house GCs show you what the EU, UK and US now require.

‍

Most businesses started using AI before anyone decided who owns the risk. A screening tool flags a candidate, a chatbot answers a customer, a vendor platform quietly switches on a new AI feature, often before legal gets a say. Meanwhile, the EU, UK and US are each writing their own answer to what that means for your business. Join Karine Ahton and Li Reilly for a free session on what already binds you, where the exposure sits, and what to fix before it becomes a problem.

‍

About this event

‍

AI is moving faster than most legal teams can keep up with, and the EU, the UK and the US are each writing a different answer to the same question. Karine and Li spend their working lives inside that gap: advising businesses on the product, the contract and the regulation at the same time.

‍

This session is led by two decades of in-house counsel experience, split across the UK and the US. Our hosts, Karine Ahton and Li Reilly have been in the room when a business had to decide whether to ship the AI feature, sign the vendor contract, or make the call before legal had time to catch up.

‍

Regulators are already using existing rules on advertising, discrimination, privacy and consumer protection to police AI, alongside new AI-specific requirements coming into force.

‍

We'll look at where the real risks are showing up for businesses right now: AI making decisions about people, AI-generated content going out to customers, and sensitive or confidential data being fed into AI tools — often through vendor contracts and data processing agreements that were never drafted with AI in mind. Add employees using tools the business doesn't officially know about, and most companies have more exposure than they realise.

‍

You'll come away with a practical starting point for managing these risks across the EU, UK and US, without having to build three separate compliance programmes from scratch. A lot of the same governance work can travel across all three.

‍

This session tells you where you actually stand, and what a defensible AI programme looks like in practice.

‍

Key topics

‍

Which AI rules actually apply to your business today: the EU AI Act requirements already in force, how UK regulators are applying existing laws to AI, and the US mix of federal and state rules

‍

Where AI is creating risk in practice: decisions about people, AI-generated content your customers see, sensitive or confidential data being shared with AI tools, and AI use happening without proper oversight.

‍

What being “AI-ready” actually looks like: knowing where AI is already being used across the business (including the tools employees have adopted on their own), putting proportionate governance around it without slowing the business down, and making sure vendor and customer contracts actually address AI — data use, liability, and who's responsible when the tool gets something wrong.

‍

What you'll take away

‍

  • A clear sense of where your own AI exposure sits, and what to prioritize first.
  • A one-pager on AI dos and don'ts your team can use immediately, covering the most common risk points from this session.

‍

Karine and Li bring experience from both sides of the table. They spent years as senior in-house lawyers, making decisions alongside the businesses they supported, and now advise companies navigating AI, technology and the legal and regulatory issues that come with them. This session combines that in-house perspective with what they are seeing across their client work today.

Karine has over 20 years’ experience advising businesses across technology, media and digital, both in-house and as outside counsel. She has held General Counsel and senior leadership roles at Moonbug Entertainment, ITV, Virgin Racing, Sanrio and Lyca Group, where she built legal teams from the ground up and advised on cross-border M&A, IP, data protection and emerging technology.
